Case Study: Work, Travel and Tax!

Scenario

Client X owned a successful online education business generating annual profits of approximately £420,000. With clients across North America, Europe and Asia, they could work from anywhere and wanted to embrace a more international lifestyle.

Having read numerous articles and watched online videos about becoming a “tax nomad”, Client X believed that simply spending less time in the UK and travelling continuously would allow them to avoid paying tax altogether.

Before making the move, they sought professional advice.

The Issue

Although Client X planned to leave the UK, they still had significant ties here, including accommodation and regular visits. They had not considered how the UK’s Statutory Residence Test applied, nor the risk of accidentally becoming tax resident in another country while travelling.

Without careful planning, they faced the possibility of remaining UK tax resident or, even worse, finding themselves subject to tax in more than one jurisdiction.ted reassurance that their return would withstand HMRC scrutiny.

How We Helped

We carried out a detailed review of Client X’s personal and business circumstances before they relocated.

Our advisers analysed their UK residence position, reviewed their travel plans and explained how the Statutory Residence Test would apply. We identified the changes needed to break UK tax residence correctly and helped them reduce their UK ties.

Rather than attempting to become resident “nowhere”, we recommended establishing tax residence in Cyprus, ensuring they had the necessary accommodation, documentation and administrative arrangements in place.

We also reviewed the treatment of their business income, identified any continuing UK tax obligations and provided guidance on record-keeping to demonstrate their residence status should HMRC ever enquire into their affairs.

Outcome

Client X successfully ceased UK tax residence and established a clear tax residence overseas. Their international business continued to grow while their personal tax affairs were structured with certainty rather than relying on assumptions or internet advice.

Based on their income levels and circumstances, the new structure reduced their annual personal tax liability by more than £70,000, while ensuring they remained fully compliant with both UK and overseas tax rules.

Most importantly, they gained confidence that their international lifestyle would not create unexpected tax issues in the future.

Client Benefit

By seeking advice before relocating, Client X avoided common pitfalls that could have resulted in HMRC enquiries, dual tax residence or unnecessary tax liabilities.

Instead of relying on the misconception that becoming a “tax nomad” means paying no tax, they established a robust international tax structure that provided certainty, compliance and significant tax savings, allowing them to focus on growing their business while enjoying the flexibility of living and working internationally.

PakarPBN

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
