Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – McDonald’s is one of the most famous fast food restaurant companies in the world. The restaurant was founded in 1940.
Initially McDonald’s was founded by two brothers from San Bernadino, California. Maurice (nickname: Mac) and Richard McDonald’s opened their first restaurant in 1948, and began selling hamburgers, French fries and milkshakes.
Today, McDonald’s is not only one of the largest fast food restaurant chains in the world, but also one of the most iconic companies in the world.
McDonald’s Fast Facts
McDonald’s is the largest restaurant company in the world. There are more than 37,000 McDonald’s locations in approximately 120 countries around the world.
The network employs more than 1.7 million people and serves more than 70 million people. McDonald’s revenue comes from sales of restaurant food, royalties and franchise fees, and rent (McDonald’s owns the land on which most of its restaurants are located and leases the land to franchisees).
As of March 2020, McDonald’s had a market capitalization of $122.9 billion. In fiscal 2019, McDonald’s full-year results included system-wide sales of more than US$100 billion and consolidated revenue of US$21.1 billion.
McDonald’s success as a brand stems from its affordable food, extremely fast service, selection of menu items, and strategic marketing.
Ronald McDonald’s corporate mascot creates brand familiarity, and popular products such as the Big Mac, Egg McMuffin, and Chicken McNuggets reinforce the brand to consumers.
In 2015, McDonald’s began serving its breakfast menu all day amid increasing demand from customers. The decision caused McDonald’s sales to increase by 5% in the first years of offering all-day breakfast.
Many countries that have McDonald’s restaurants have different menu items that are unique to that country. However, it turns out that not all countries have McDonald’s fast food restaurants.
Even though McDonald’s has more than 39,000 restaurants worldwide and continues to grow every year, there are still many countries that do not have a McDonald’s. There are several possible reasons for this exception.
Some countries lack the supply chain and infrastructure to keep McDonald’s operational. Countries are too politically unstable, or their societies are too poor, for the operational costs involved to be a wise investment.
However, the list of countries that do not have a McDonald’s grows slightly every year. For example, Brunei, Tunisia were both removed from this list (and added to the list of countries that have McDonald’s) in 2021.
