Facebook-Instagram Mentally Harassing Children and Adolescents, Sued! Tech – 4 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Meta is under pressure. United States representatives accused Meta’s social media, Instagram and Facebook, of having a negative impact on children and teenagers.

A coalition of US congressmen from the Republican and Democratic parties sued Meta in federal court. The company led by Mark Zuckerberg is accused of knowing about Facebook’s tactics in implementing addictive features. Facebook features are considered to have a negative impact on children’s mental health and eating disorders in teenagers.

Apart from the people’s representatives, public prosecutors from 9 US states also sued.

“The number of children and teenagers suffering from mental health is hitting records, and social media companies like Meta are guilty,” said prosecutor Letitia James. “Meta takes advantage of children’s suffering by intentionally designing social media features that make them addicted and lose self-esteem.”

Dave Yost, a prosecutor from the state of Ohio, said the lawsuit against Meta was an attempt to “force the company to change its policies” because parents let their children use applications made by Meta. “Users of these platforms are very vulnerable to cyberbullying and becoming targets of online predators. Meta makes it even worse, because children become victims.”

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone stated that there are 30 features on Meta’s social media available to “support teens and their families.”

“We are disappointed that, instead of working with companies from across industries to create clear and appropriate standards for apps used by teens, prosecutors have chosen this path,” Stone said in response to news of the lawsuit against Meta.
