Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BRI) is committed to fulfilling its social and environmental responsibilities by distributing programs that can actually encourage the improvement of the environmental ecosystem. Sone of them passed by BRI Cares for Farming in Cities (BRInita) program.
Through this program, BRI supports residents in Gurabesi Village, Jayapura to maintain sustainability in the surrounding environment.
BRI Corporate Secretary Agustya Hendy Bernadi said that the BRInita program is one of BRI’s real commitments to preserving the environment in the city center which utilizes narrow land in densely populated areas.
“This program is not only in one point, but in 18 regions in Indonesia. With the infrastructure assistance that we provide, it is hoped that this program can continue to run continuously so that it becomes a positive forum for the community. Hopefully the story of the Pelangi Baru Dasawisma Group will be an inspiring story that “can be imitated by other groups,” explained Hendy in an official statement, Thursday (26/10/2023).
Please note that Gurabesi has quite limited land and its area is also relatively small compared to other areas in Jayapura. Therefore, residents have to rack their brains to make the environment more sustainable, while also getting other benefits from this.
This is where BRInita plays a role by teaching the hydroponic method of farming which is practiced by the local community. Not only can it make the environment greener, but it can also meet the food needs of local residents.
Planting using the hydroponic method is considered very appropriate for the Gurabesi area. This is because this planting method has many benefits and only requires relatively small costs.
The benefits obtained from this planting method are that the environment becomes greener and people can also meet their food needs. Apart from that, the application of hydroponics is also able to reduce the number of stunted children in Jayapura.
“With hydroponics, the residents of Jayapura City will certainly be able to meet children’s needs for fruit and vegetables. Because apart from vegetables such as Pakcoy, Lettuce, Palm Oil, Water Spinach and others, they can also be grown in hydroponic media, fruit can also be grown, for example “Strawberries and similar fruit,” explained Gurabesi Village Head Maria Jochu.
Local Communities Empowered with Hydroponics
Maria also said that changes were starting to be felt by the people of Gurabesi. From initially being confused about planting on a narrow plot of land, they finally met the hydroponic method which was very helpful in meeting their daily food needs.
“During the hydroponic planting system, we were able to get new education about this method. Not only how to grow plants, but we also learned how to use it to grow living plants, vegetables and fruit for our family environment. each,” said Maria.
Maria also revealed that this harvest could be used to be reprocessed into delicious food for children.
“So maybe if there are children who really have difficulty eating vegetables, we can also process them into foods that are more enjoyable and suit their tastes. So, children can also eat vegetables to meet their nutritional needs. “BRI also provides guidance for beneficiaries in the form of urban farming management training by collaborating with experts/relevant agencies such as those from agriculture and providing regular guidance,” he concluded.
