Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has opened its voice regarding the Israeli air attack incident on the Arab al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza which killed more than 500 people on Tuesday (17/10/2023) local time.
“Indonesia strongly condemns Israel’s attack on Al Ahly Al Arabi Hospital in Gaza which killed hundreds of civilians. This attack clearly violates international humanitarian law,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a post by the @Kemlu_RI account on social media X, previously Twitter.
“Indonesia urges that safe corridors for humanitarian access be opened immediately,” he continued.
Apart from that, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said that Indonesia had urged the international community, especially the UN Security Council, to immediately take concrete steps to stop attacks and acts of violence in Gaza.
“Injustice against the Palestinian people has been going on for a very long time and is still happening. It’s time for the world to prioritize just peace for Palestine,” stressed the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Earlier, Gaza’s Health Ministry, which is run by Hamas, said at least 500 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the hospital, also known as the Baptist hospital. A spokesman for Gaza’s civil defense put the death toll at around 300 people.
On the other hand, the Israeli military said initial investigations showed that the explosion was caused by a failed Hamas rocket launch, before saying that it was the result of a Palestinian Islamic Jihad rocket attack. Islamic Jihad denies Israel’s accusations, and the scale of the explosion appears to be beyond the militant group’s capabilities.
Footage broadcast from the field by Al Jazeera shows huge flames engulfing the multi-storey building, with many bodies, bloodstains and debris strewn everywhere.
The hospital belonging to the Anglican church was reportedly attacked without warning. Previously, the hospital was hit by rockets on Saturday in an attack that injured four medical staff.
