Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) responded to the opportunity for his eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to become a vice presidential candidate (cawapres) accompanying Prabowo Subianto who wants to become a presidential candidate (capres).
According to Jokowi, the issue of Gibran’s candidacy is not within his authority as President. He handed this over directly to Gibran.
“Parents’ job is only to pray and bless,” he said after attending the 2023 Santri Day rally in Surabaya, Sunday (22/10/2023).
He added that Gibran was an adult and he would not interfere in his son’s affairs.
“Because we are adults, don’t interfere too much in matters that have been decided by our children,” he said.
Jokowi also said that questions regarding Gibran’s candidacy as vice presidential candidate were more appropriate to ask political parties.
“Ask, ask the political parties. That is the territory of political parties or coalitions of political parties or combinations of political parties, it is not the president’s business,” said Jokowi when asked by journalists about this, quoted from the Presidential Secretariat YouTube.
Indications of Gibran becoming Prabowo’s vice presidential candidate strengthened after the Constitutional Court (MK) granted the lawsuit regarding the minimum age requirements for presidential candidates (capres) and vice presidential candidates (cawapres).
Now people under 40 years old can contest for RI 1 and RI 2, as long as they have served as regional head. This opened the door for Gibran to run as a candidate for Vice President.
Gibran’s candidacy was further strengthened after the Golkar Party officially nominated Jokowi’s eldest son as vice presidential candidate.
Gibran, who currently still serves as Mayor of Solo, is said to have visited a number of leaders of the Advanced Indonesia Coalition (KIM) party which endorsed Prabowo as president.
