Minister of Communication and Information Ultimatum, FB-IG Delete 1.6 Million Online Gambling Content Tech – 19 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Meta was once hit by an ultimatum from the Minister of Communication and Information, Budi Arie Setiadi, to clean up online gambling content. It didn’t take long for 1.6 million pieces of content to be discovered by the company and immediately deleted.

Previously, Budi had written to Meta to eradicate online gambling on October 10 2023. The company founded by Mark Zuckerberg was given 24 hours to carry out the Minister of Communication and Information’s orders.

After 24 hours, Meta has not closed all online gambling content. However, during that time millions of content have been blocked by the company.

From data obtained by the Ministry of Communication and Information CNBC Indonesia, the amount of gambling content on Meta as of October 11, 2023 is more than 1.65 million content. Meanwhile there are more than 450 thousand online gambling advertisements which the company has also removed.

“Meta apparently responded very well to the warning I sent. Based on the report I received, as of October 11 2023, Meta has followed up on the warning,” said Budi at the Press Conference on the Development of Handling Online Gambling, at the Kominfo office, Jakarta, Friday (20 /10/2023).

This step, he said, shows that commitment from all parties is needed to handle online gambling content. In this way, the takedown efforts carried out by Kominfo can complement those carried out by the platform.

Budi also does not hesitate to give a warning to platforms that are not serious about eradicating online gambling. This includes imposing heavy sanctions on stubborn platforms.

“I will not hesitate to impose heavy sanctions on platforms that are still stubborn and not serious in handling online gambling content,” he explained.

Apart from that, Budi also advised the community to play a role in this effort. Namely informing anti-online gambling in the surrounding area, including family and friends.

“The active role of the community in promoting anti-online gambling in the surrounding environment is very necessary, protecting family, friends and people around them from eradicating this societal disease,” he said.
