Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Minister of Communication and Information Budi Arie Setiadi revealed that several countries are hotbeds for online gambling. Including two neighboring countries to Indonesia, namely Cambodia and the Philippines.
He revealed that online gambling servers are known to move frequently but the centers come from these two countries.
“You see, they move IPs, change addresses, but we already know that the centers are in Cambodia and the Philippines,” said the Minister of Communication and Information, Budi Arie Setiadi, at the Press Conference on the Development of Handling Online Gambling, at the Kominfo office, Jakarta, Friday ( 10/20/2023).
Even though he continues to take steps to eradicate online gambling, Budi admits that it is not easy. Moreover, this is done against the sophistication of technology that is currently developing.
“We are trying our best, but technology is called sophistication versus sophistication. But we have made the ecosystem not conducive, that’s our serious step,” said Budi.
Budi mentioned several steps to shut down the online gambling ecosystem. For example, blocking promotions that often come through cell phone numbers.
To block it, Kominfo is collaborating with cellular operators. However, he again mentioned that online gambling promotions used operator numbers from Cambodia and the Philippines.
“We get promotions from WhatsApp from other countries, from Cambodia and the Philippines, which means our cellular operator number is no longer in use,” explained Budi.
Apart from that, Kominfo is also working with the Financial Services Authority and Bank Indonesia to block accounts for online gambling transactions. Over the last three months, 2,760 accounts and 540 e-wallet accounts have been blocked.
