Can Indonesian Citizens Subscribe to Starlink Next Year? Here’s the Tech Leak – 17 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite-based internet network, will not necessarily operate next year in Indonesia. Because there are still conditions that have not been met.

On its official website, Starlink has labeled the Indonesian map as being served in 2024. The label reads ‘Starting in 2024’ or starting next year.

On the Service Address page when entering several regions in Indonesia, it is also written that the SpaceX network is targeting to operate starting next year. However, it is written that its availability still depends on regulatory approval.

Starlink also opens opportunities for people who want to pre-order this service. Orders are priced at US$ 9 (Rp. 140 thousand), and the deposit will be returned if you do not subscribe.

Asked about this information, Minister of Communication and Information, Budi Arie Setiadi, stated that Starlink will not be operational next year. “Yes, not yet,” said he when met at the Ministry of Communication and Information office, Jakarta, Friday (20/10/2023).

He emphasized that Starlink must have an Indonesian IP address. In this way, the government can continue to monitor user content.

“Yes, if we don’t have the IP address, how do we control it? We have to have data sovereignty,” said Budi.

If the IP address comes from outside Indonesia, it is feared that negative content such as online gambling and pornography can be accessed easily. For this reason, Starlink is required to have a domestic IP address.

Budi added that the government is open to anyone doing business in the country. However, it should be noted to still follow the existing rules.

“We are opening the Indonesian government to business opportunities for anyone. But we must follow the rules and regulations in Indonesia,” said Budi.
