International US President Joe Biden: I Am A Zionist News – 48 minutes ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The President of the United States (US) Joe Biden apparently made a surprising statement last weekend. As published Reutershe said he was a Zionist, in front of Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu.

He said this during his visit to Israel. He said “I don’t believe one has to be Jewish to be a Zionist, and I am a Zionist”.

Biden actually has no Jewish blood. He is of Irish Catholic descent.

But this is not the first time he has said something similar. According to the same page in the past, he has often expressed his interest in Israel.

Biden’s statement received nods from Tel Aviv politicians and generals. This was told by a US official source who attended the closed meeting, even when Gaza was blockaded and bombarded with Israeli air strikes which resulted in many civilian casualties.

Biden is said to be one of the most prominent “friends of Israel” in US politics. A number of other sources said that in Biden and Netanyahu’s private session of the meeting, the two did not even show the tension that sometimes arises when leaders of countries meet.

But Biden asked Netanyahu tough questions about the “impending attack” including “have you thought about what will happen the next day?”. He even expressed doubts whether Israel had not achieved its final goal.

“Biden’s relationship with Israel is deeply embedded in his political DNA,” Aaron David Miller, a former Middle East negotiator who served six secretaries of state in both Democratic and Republican administrations, responded.

“Like it or not, he is in the midst of a crisis that he must overcome,” he stressed.

Have you been getting Israeli money for a long time?

According to a former US official, Biden’s awareness of the centuries-long persecution of Jews and the record high number of antisemitic incidents in the US last year may be the reason why Biden is siding with Israel. Especially after the Hamas attack on October 7, which was the worst incident for Israel in the last 80 years.

However, looking back, during his 36 years in the Senate, Biden was the recipient of the largest donation in history from pro-Israel groups, receiving U$4.2 million, according to the Open Secrets database. As vice president, Biden often acted as a mediator in the sensitive relationship between Barack Obama and Netanyahu, who was said to have often prevented attacks on Palestine.

Dennis Ross, a Middle East adviser in Obama’s first term, recalled Biden intervening to “prevent retaliation against Netanyahu for diplomatic insults during Obama’s 2010 visit”. Obama at that time, Ross said, wanted to take strong action over Israel’s announcement of a major expansion of housing for Jews in East Jerusalem, the half of the city inhabited mostly by Arabs that was captured in the 1967 war.

“Whenever things get out of hand with Israel, Biden is the bridge,” said Ross, who now works at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

“His commitment to Israel is so strong… And that’s the instinct we’re seeing now,” he added.

Threatened in the 2024 presidential election

Meanwhile, Biden’s alignment with the Jewish right-wing leader risks his party, the Democratic Party. This could even jeopardize Biden’s position in the 2024 elections, as international criticism of Israel’s tactics increases, with the US also blaming it.

This too, is still loading Reutershas prompted many Palestinians and other Arab countries to consider Biden too biased in favor of Israel to act as a peace broker.

“President Biden, not all Americans support you on this, and you need to wake up and understand,” said Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian American in Congress.

“We are literally witnessing people committing genocide,” he added.

On the other hand, a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Monday showed stronger US public sympathy for Israel than before. There is the highest support for Israel among Republicans at 54%, compared to 37% for Democrats.

However, younger generations of Americans show less support for Israel. This is when compared to older Americans.
