Kominfo Gives 1×24 Hours to Delete Fake Content on FB Cs Tech – 10 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The spread of hoax content has developed into fake videos or known as ‘Deepfakes’. This video shows as if a character is saying something, even though it never happened.

The use of deepfakes during elections is widespread in the United States (US). One of the mayoral candidates was apparently attacked using a deepfake video distributed via social media.

Director General of IKP at the Ministry of Communication and Information, Usman Kansong, said that social media moved too late regarding the deepfake video. So, platforms are asked to move quickly to block hoax content, including fake videos that are circulating.

“Kominfo has a collaboration with 1×24 hour platforms that must be taken down, as soon as hoaxes are identified,” said Usman after the Inauguration of Bakohumas Management for the 2023-2028 Period and the 2024 Bakohumas Program Coordination Meeting, Jakarta, Monday (23/10/2023).

“We are working together in the context of taking down hoaxes or deepfakes from the platform. Apart from encouraging the creation of technology that can prevent deepfakes or hoaxes,” he added.

He admitted that the rules for removing hoax content 1×24 hours are still old. Maybe in the future, Usman added that there will be an updated MoU with the platform regarding this matter.

He said that platforms needed quick action to block hoax content. Because the longer the content circulates on social media, the more trusted it will be by many users.

“No matter how stupid people are, if it wasn’t facilitated by the platform, it wouldn’t have happened, that’s something like a hoax,” he explained.

Secretary General of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Suhajar Diantoro also touched on the issue of the spread of fake videos among the public. This content is a tough task for public relations ministries/institutions.

Hoax content, both written and video, needs to be handled quickly. This includes public relations parties who are asked to have adequate technological capabilities to be able to identify whether content is fake or not.

“Because if it’s too late to say this is fake, the news has already spread, which is very dangerous,” he said.
