The term election stress disorder has recently been often thrown around to describe people’s feelings about the upcoming election.


Generally, Election Stress Disorder is characterized by feelings of anxiety. In fact, to vent their feelings, people flooded social media with comments about how tired they were about the election and the events leading up to the election.

The origin of the term Election Stress Disorder

Quoting health.com, the term Election Stress Disorder was first coined in 2016 by psychologist Steven Stosny, PhD. Stosny used the term in an article for The Washington Postin which he wrote that he was overwhelmed with patients during the 2016 election cycle.

The constant news about the election stressed his patients and even disrupted their personal lives.

Since then, the term Election Stress Disorder has begun to be widely used by the public.

What is Election Stress Disorder?

For the record, Election Stress Disorder is not an official medical diagnosis. However, this does not mean that people cannot feel great stress before the election.

“Elections are high-risk events that have long-term implications and serious consequences,” Monifa Seawell, MD, a board-certified psychiatrist in Atlanta told Health.

The 2016 Stress in America Survey, conducted by the American Psychological Association, found that 52% of Americans said the 2016 presidential election was a very or somewhat significant source of stress in their lives.

Not infrequently, before the election, many people are seen to be at odds with each other, even vilifying and slandering other parties. This condition is possible affects daily life and causes stress.

Symptoms of Election Stress Disorder

According to Dr. Seawell, election-related stress can show up for us in the same way that stress shows up at other times. Election Stress Disorder can cause disruption and imbalance in your daily routine.

Symptoms can include having difficulty sleeping because you are worried about what will be discussed in the presidential debate, or experiencing mental disorders due to news about the election.

Election-related stress can also arise when you are afraid of missing out on the latest news or when you may start checking your phone frequently for news every hour.

This can also make you restless and irritable. You may even feel anxious around certain people who you know have different political views, worried that certain topics will come up.
