International Hamas-Israel Riots, UN Says Middle East Will Enter ‘Abyss’ News – 1 hour ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The escalating war between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas group is pushing the Middle East region into a dangerous abyss, where the risk of conflict is growing. This was warned directly by the UN envoy to the Middle East.

Tor Wennesland, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, fears that the world is on the verge of a deep and dangerous abyss that could change the course of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“This is one of the most difficult moments the Israeli and Palestinian people have faced in the last 75 years,” he told the UN Security Council via video link, as quoted CNBC International.

On October 7, the Hamas group launched a multi-pronged attack by land, sea and air, and infiltrated Israel. This sudden attack killed more than 1,000 people and 200 people were kidnapped, including babies and the elderly.

In response, Israel retaliated with air strikes on the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian enclave ruled by Hamas. Since then, the enclave has been the target of aerial bombardment for days now.

Wennesland warned that developments since then “serve to reignite grievances and reinvigorate alliances across the region.”

“The risk of the conflict escalating is very, very real and very dangerous,” he added.

Human rights bodies have condemned the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where food, water and electricity are running out after Israel cut off supplies.

On Tuesday night, the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza City was bombed and killed hundreds of people, sparking protests in the Middle East and beyond. The hospital serves as a refuge for those seeking protection from Israeli airstrikes.

Israel denied that its rockets hit the hospital, and the United States (US) government said it received information from the Pentagon that Israel was not responsible for the deadly attack.

The death toll from the escalating conflict continues to rise. According to the government press office, more than 1,400 people in Israel were killed, and 3,500 others were injured. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that more than 3,700 people were killed in Gaza and around 12,500 people were injured.
