TikTok Boss Wants to Meet Jokowi, Teten Asked to Accept Tech – 4 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Tiktok CEO Shou Chew reportedly wrote to President Joko Widodo. Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs, Teten Masduki, explained that Chew had asked to meet with Jokowi.

“Tiktok’s CEO wrote to the President wanting to meet him. He handed it over to me,” said Teten at the office of the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, Jakarta, Wednesday (25/10/2023).

He explained that Jokowi asked him to receive Chew when he visited Indonesia. Only he was asked to meet the TikTok boss and no other ministers.

According to him, Jokowi’s order was because what happened with e-commerce had an impact on SMEs, parties under his ministry.

When asked when the meeting would be held, Teten said there were no plans yet. However, his party will contact TikTok to discuss this matter.

“I don’t know, we will contact later,” he said.

Regarding the details of the conversation, Teten also didn’t say much. “Yes, we’ll see the details later when we find them. I was assigned by the president, so I’ll do it,” he said.

He said the possibility of the TikTok Shop opening again is definitely there. Because revenue from these services in Indonesia reaches more than IDR 8 trillion per month.

The government itself has opened itself up to foreigners entering the country. However, Teten reminded that in accordance with Minister of Trade Regulation 31 of 2023, Tiktok must follow the existing regulations in Indonesia.

“There is no unification between TikTok social media and shops. They must have an office here and cannot be a representative office, an Indonesian legal entity. We want, as the president suggested, they must develop a sustainable business model,” said Teten.

TikTok Shop officially closed in Indonesia on October 4 2023. This is because e-commerce services cannot be integrated with social media, a practice that TikTok has carried out with Shop services in recent times.
